Collie Information

I have written a number of articles to help breeders, exhibitors, and all lovers of the Rough Collie learn more about them.

Although no Vycaran Collies are affected by CEA, DM, MDR1, or PRA, we think it's important to help spread awareness of the effect they have on our breed. You can also find out more about other genetics such as coat colour here.

Please enjoy reading and get in touch if you have any questions.

Health

Dermatomyositis (DMS)

Dermatomyositis (DMS) is an inherited inflammatory disease of the skin and muscle. Find out more about it here.

Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)

Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) is an inherited eye disease that affects many of the collie breeds, and is extremely prevalent in Rough and Smooth Collies. Find out more about it here.

Multidrug Resistance Gene (MDR1)

MDR1 is a gene found in many Rough and Smooth Collies. It causes problems when the body tries to remove certain drugs from the brain. Find out more about it here.

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive disease of the spinal cord. It can affect 43 breeds of dog, including some Rough and Smooth Collies. Find out more here.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

rcd2-PRA is an eye disease leading to early onset night blindness. It's not present in UK dogs, but can be found in the US gene pool. Find out more about it here.

Cyclic Neutropenia (CN) / Gray Collie Syndrome

CN is an inherited stem cell disorder, that is sadly fatal. It's rare, and thankfully not found in the UK. Find out more here.

Dermatomyositis (DMS)

This is an information bank on diseases that affect the Collie. Most of the diseases in this list can be tested for which means breeders can produce Collies that are completely free of disease. Ask your chosen breeder if their dogs are affected by these diseases and ask for copies of their genetic testing certificates.
